Virtual Icebreaker Facilitator and Participant Guides
Let’s break the ice . . . virtually!
I created this concept icebreaker activity, and accompanying facilitator and participant guides, to support building community in a virtual work environment.
Audience: Virtual facilitators that want to use an icebreaker to build community
Activity Duration: 10-12 minutes
Delivery Modality: Virtual
Responsibilities: Facilitator and participant guide developer, icebreaker activity developer
Tool Used: Google Docs
The Problem
Many employees work in either hybrid or 100% remote work environments. With this shift, the opportunity to connect with colleagues has dramatically declined, making it more challenging to build community.
The Solution
Keeping this shift in mind, I designed a virtual icebreaker activity to encourage connection through shared cultural, culinary, and linguistic experiences. I also created facilitator and participant guides, to accompany the icebreaker, to ensure a smooth facilitator and participant experience.
My Process
Facilitator and Participant Guides
I used Google Docs to create the facilitator and participant guides.
I supported the facilitator experience by creating a script, content pacing time markers, and hyperlinking the required documents for the activity.
I supported the participant experience by creating a session outline, including Padlet usage instructions, and hyperlinking all of the icebreaker activity documents.
Icebreaker Activity Design
I designed this 10-12 minute virtual icebreaker activity for facilitators that want to use cultural, culinary, and/or linguistic commonalities to build community with a group of 10-12 employees. I incorporated an interactive element by adding a Padlet activity to increase engagement and offer participants the opportunity to share thoughts, experiences and ideas, in real-time, during the activity.
